Reverie

After the glamour, the fizz and the fireworks of Death by Confetti, Depp shows another, tenderer side, first with his retreat in France, and then in his Reverie. Depp’s home in Provence provided shelter and release, and in turn has fired a more mellow side to his creativity. Meanwhile, in Reverie, portraits of his mother, his children and his beloved dog Mooh all provide an insight into the private, emotional world that he inhabits. But within these portraits, idiosyncrasies are never far away: Moohman is presented on a monumental scale, making the dog seem the size he would appear when inches from Depp’s face. His daughter Lily Rose is represented by flowers in codified portraits.

Even in our introduction to Depp’s inner sanctum, there is a labyrinth to navigate, no path is straight, but as ever, it isn’t about the destination—it’s about the ride. Fittingly, Reverie includes a poetic word painting that evokes the limits yet infinite beauty of life, featuring words spoken by Depp’s late friend and mentor Marlon Brando: ‘Life is a bird’s song’.
